Dipan (14), a Gunung Sejahtera Dua Indah (GSDI) Junior High School student, created a comic about a Central Kalimantan folktale, Hantuen. It tells the story of a demon or ghost who can transform into a human and eventually marry one of them. The student lives in Nangamua Village, West Kotawaringin, and says he enjoys drawing and illustrating. With the guidance of his GSDI Junior High School teacher, Dipan was inspired to make comics from folklore by utilising school gadgets.
“I decided to illustrate the Hantuen folklore into a comic to preserve the culture of the Dayak people so that it will not be forgotten with time,’ said the Dayak student.”
According to him, legends or folklore tales are rarely found nowadays and tend to be eroded by the times. Comics are one way for children of Dipan’s age to be more interested in reading and learning about culture and the legends of local communities, especially Central Kalimantan.
Dipan also said he will continue making comics based on other folktales in Central Kalimantan. He continues to draw comics as a hobby despite his busy school schedule.
Through mediums in art like comic books, Dipan hopes that more people will be interested in folklore.
‘We always integrate student development at GSDI Junior High School with the culture of the local community so that children can still receive education while maintaining their hobbies and interests,’ said the Principal of GSDI Junior High School, Catur Suharsono.
