Aceh Singkil (ANTARA) – The role of doctors is very much needed, especially for people in remote villages. Therefore, appreciation deserves to be pinned on those who devote themselves to helping maintain public health, especially in remote areas.
This was done by Osmi Samra, a tough woman who tirelessly provides services to the community in Telaga Bhakti Village and Pandan Sari Village, Aceh Singkil.
“Her contribution is genuine and important for the community,” Community Development Area Manager of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk Aceh Region, Riduan Manik, told ANTARA on Thursday (24/10).
Osmi Samra heads a polyclinic that is part of the operations of PT Perkebunan Lembah Bhakti (PLB), an Astra Agro Group oil palm plantation company.
With her commitment and tireless service, it is not surprising that the woman who has served as Astra Agro’s doctor for 20 years has received an award from the company.
“This award is one of the honours in my life, a real proof that the company appreciates my dedication all this time,” said Osmi Samra, reminiscing.
“Public health is the main motivation in providing service,” said Osmi Samra.
According to her, being a doctor is a noble profession, a dedication to tirelessly providing public health services. Wherever he is placed, it is not an obstacle for him to devote himself.
As a general practitioner practising at PT PLB’s Garden Polyclinic (polibun) health facility, he has handled many minor illnesses to acute illnesses and even served patients about to give birth.
Being a doctor in the operational area of an oil palm plantation company has its challenges because it is far from the capital city or other public facilities.
But that does not discourage him from providing health services to people in need, including employees and their families who work in oil palm companies.
“Our dedication has no limits for the sake of humanity. We don’t know near and far, we don’t care about time, even though the operational hours of the plantation are office hours, but we must be ready 24 hours when needed,” she said.
Once a civil servant
Doctor Osmi Samra said that before joining Astra Agro’s oil palm plantation, she was a civil servant at a health centre in Jambi Province.
The profession of a doctor with civil servant status then forced her and her children to be separated from her beloved husband. Her husband had to work in an oil palm plantation company owned by Astra Agro, which at that time moved from one area to another.
Although the status of a civil servant is a dream for some people, Osmi Samra, who at that time had to undergo her status as a worker and housewife, often felt anxious.
Moreover, it was not uncommon for her child, who was still very young at the time, to keep asking about her father’s whereabouts, which made her want to continue to be beside her beloved husband.
And then came the opportunity. In 2005, one of the leaders at Astra Agro offered him a job as a doctor in the garden polyclinic. He was willing, but he had to give up his status as a civil servant doctor.
“It was a dilemma, but because my children and I wanted to be close to my husband and be a complete family, I chose to leave my civil servant status and work as a doctor in an oil palm plantation,” she said.
Doctor Osmi continued. At first, it was not directly at PT PLB Aceh; the initial placement was in Kalimantan because her husband was also still stationed there at that time.
For her, creating a happy family requires an intact family without being away from her husband.
Despite migrating far from her hometown of West Sumatra, doctor Osmi Samra admits that working in the operational area of oil palm plantations has its challenges but is still fun.
For example, during his placement in Kalimantan some time ago, to get to the location of his workplace, he had to take a speedboat for hours. Not to mention serving the community in areas far from urban areas. Although it was not easy, he managed to survive until now.
He treats his patients and often motivates them to live healthy lives so that others can live healthier and higher-quality lives.
Although she now has to be far away from her first child because she is studying to be a doctor in Java, this is the result of a struggle that is not in vain for her. This is clear evidence that his son is continuing his profession.
Becoming a gender committee
The story, determination, and humanitarian commitment of doctor Osmi Samra are one of the motivations for women in the archipelago. One can work outside the city centre or in an adequate location with better public access services to serve the community.
As one of the female workers, Dr Osmi Samra is a role model for other women. Women can contribute and work according to their roles.
She is very grateful to be in a work environment that implements and creates equality and inclusiveness for everyone.
This is in accordance with Astra Agro’s commitment to upholding human rights and gender equality in the work environment, especially the protection of women and children.
This commitment is expressed in forming a gender committee that oversees Women Champions in each subsidiary as a human resource development effort.
Doctor Osmi Samra is one of the representatives of women workers in the Aceh palm oil plantation, PT PLB, as the gender committee.
This committee partly aims to fulfil women’s rights, provide an inclusive workplace, provide facilities for women workers, and implement development programs for women workers.
Serving the community never knows age, anywhere and in any form. Serving is spreading kindness and usefulness to the environment and society.
