Curiosity is a natural trait of children that drives them to explore and understand the world around them. This curiosity is essential, especially when they are learning about the environment.
In South Kalimantan, Astra Agro utilizes interactive and locally focused learning methods to teach children about the importance of protecting nature.
Two of Astra Agro’s palm oil subsidiaries in South Kalimantan, PT Subur Agro Makmur (SAM) and PT Tri Buana Mas (TBM), integrate environmental education into their regular activities. This education is provided through a variety of hands-on and engaging activities that enable students to learn in a fun and practical way.
Learning about the environment should extend beyond the classroom. We want children to enjoy the learning process and help them understand and retain information more effectively.
“Through this method, they can experience firsthand the lesson they are learning,” said Fajar Luqman, Astra Agro’s Community Development Area Manager for South Kalimantan.
One of the event’s highlights was a fire-fighting simulation conducted by the fire prevention team from PT SAM and TBM.
According to Fajar, this activity provided an educational experience focused on safety and environmental protection. The students were impressed by the firefighters’ demonstration.
During the simulation, the students had the opportunity to learn about fire prevention and suppression procedures in a hands-on manner.
Fajar emphasized that this activity was designed with careful attention to safety while still allowing students to actively participate.
“I was happy to take part in the firefighting simulation with the firefighters. We were asked to wear protective gear, such as helmets, and we had the chance to climb onto the fire engine to see the equipment up close,” said Haikal, a student from Bajayau Lestari Middle School who participated in the event.
In total, nearly 300 students from various educational levels, ranging from kindergarten to junior high school, participated in this activity. PT SAM and TBM support these students.
In addition to learning fire prevention methods, they also received education about nature conservation, which is part of the sustainability culture campaign implemented in their schools.
Zaki Kurniatullah, the Principal of Bajayau Lestari Middle School, stated that a culture of sustainability has been established at their school since the early days
Teaching students about environmentally friendly practices and healthy living is crucial for fostering a generation that cares for nature and its surroundings.
“The environmental education through hands-on approach is part of our ongoing collaboration with PT SAM and TBM. This initiative allows all students to engage directly with the material they are learning,” said Zaki.
PT SAM and TBM are implementing similar efforts at SMA 1 Daha Barat and MA Izharusalam Daha Selatan. Astra Agro is committed to providing sustainable environmental education to ensure that the younger generation remains aware and responsible about ecological sustainability.
