Yudison, a 32-year-old son of Dayak Kayan, was born and raised in Long Melah Village, located in the Telen District of East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan Province. He is currently reaping the rewards of his hard work at PT Karyanusa Ekadaya (KED), a PT Astra Agro Lestari (AAL) Tbk subsidiary.
Yudison, who has a nine-month-old child, recalled that his first encounter with PT KED, an oil palm company operating in East Kalimantan, began in his childhood.
He admitted that his interest in working for an oil palm company started when he reconnected with a childhood friend employed at a subsidiary of PT AAL Tbk, specifically PT Subur Abadi Plantations (SAP), where the salary was attractive. This sparked his desire to join the company.
With a high school diploma and strong determination, Yudison applied for a job at PT KED, despite feeling uncertain about his chances of being hired.
At a young age, he was eventually accepted to work at PT KED as a foreman. However, during his first two years of employment, Yudison often felt indecisive, which led him to miss work occasionally.
“When I first joined PT KED, I was just looking to earn some money; I had no intention of working on an oil palm plantation,” Yudison remarked with a laugh. “However, I take my responsibilities seriously,” he added, explaining that his family instilled a strong sense of responsibility in him from a young age.
Over time, Yudison was promoted to a higher position by performing his duties responsibly. He didn’t expect a task initially considered ordinary to become a job he wholeheartedly pursued.
By 2023, Yudison has started to take his work more seriously and wants to contribute more to the company. He believes that the company encourages employee productivity by offering awards.
Through this experience, he understands the significance of pursuing a career. When employees perform well, there is no need to request rewards; the company will acknowledge and appreciate their contributions.
Yudison’s diligence and responsibility in working gave sweet fruit, he recorded a proud performance at PT KED, able to answer the challenges given by the company.
The palm oil company’s trust continues to grow, as seen from the mandate given by PT KED to Yudison for the position or duty of crop assistant.
A growing village
Yudison is not the only one who has been positively impacted by the presence of PT KED. The village of Long Melah, where Dayak Kayan’s son was born and is in the vicinity of the PT AAL Group company, has also progressed.
PT AAL has entered Long Melah Village to improve community access.
Since PT AAL opened access to the road, travel times have significantly decreased compared to using the river. Yudison explained that previously, the journey to Wahai SP could take up to six hours or even an entire day.
As a result of this improved access, Long Melah Village has experienced economic growth. Infrastructure developments, such as the State Electricity Company (PLN) entry, have also occurred, leading to an increase in the village’s population.
In the past, two-wheeled motorized vehicles (motorbikes) were parked in nearly every household, but now, four-wheeled vehicles (cars) are also common in almost all homes in Long Melah Village.
Yudison noted that many people from outside Long Melah Village have come to work and settle in the area due to job opportunities provided by nearby oil palm companies.
The relationship between the company and the community is expected to flourish, with the cooperation between the village and PT AAL fostering prosperity for the surrounding community.
