The rainy season is typically associated with lower fire risks due to high humidity levels. However, it is still crucial for companies like PT Karyanusa Eka Daya (KED), a subsidiary of Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (ALLI), to prioritize fire emergency response training and simulations.
Recognizing the significance of safety culture in the company, Rasyid, the Administrative Manager of PT Karyanusa Eka Daya, highlights that regular training is essential for instilling safety awareness among all employees, regardless of weather conditions or seasons.
The rainy season may reduce the risk of fires in open areas, but the danger of fires indoors remains. Electrical short circuits, overheating machinery, and small oversights—such as forgetting to turn off a heater—can still spark a fire. “With ongoing training, employees are prepared to handle various emergencies at any time,” Rasid said.
For a company like PT KED, which is committed to sustainability, this training supports the goal of achieving zero fatal accidents. PT KED aims to minimize any risks that could threaten the safety of employees and the community by involving all internal staff and the PT KED TKTD Team.
The training activities include fire management simulations using fire blankets, light fire extinguishers (APAR), and practical exercises with fire trucks. “We hope this fire emergency response training and simulation will enhance our preparedness for fire prevention and control, both within and outside the company. This initiative aims to improve occupational health and safety in our work environment,” stated Slamet, Assistant Fire Officer at PT KED.
Since 2017, PT KED, a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari, has been assisting village communities around its concession with a land fire prevention and suppression program. The company has established and nurtured local communities by forming a Fire Care Community (MPA) institution.
As of 2022, PT KED has fostered 111 MPAs in the surrounding villages and has seen positive results in reducing the incidence of fires on community land.
Additionally, PT KED has maintained a “No Burn Policy” since January 2007, which underscores the company’s commitment to preventing and controlling forest and land fires (Karhutla). This commitment is further reinforced in Astra Agro’s Sustainability Policy through the Sustainability Aspirations framework.
Astra Agro’s Sustainability Aspirations align with the Astra Sustainability Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company has set targets to be achieved by 2030, in line with the 3-P roadmap. This roadmap focuses on portfolio development, workforce engagement, public contribution, and land fire prevention, demonstrating Astra Agro’s strong commitment to operational excellence.
