Plastic waste poses a serious threat to the environment, from pollution and ecosystem damage to climate change. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) notes that by 2024, Indonesia will be the second-largest contributor of plastic waste in the world.
PT Tunggal Perkasa Plantations (TPP), a subsidiary of Astra Agro Lestari involved in oil palm plantations, launched the Plastic Waste Reduction Movement (GKSP) program in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau, as part of its commitment to environmental concerns.
This program aims to educate the community to start reducing the use of single-use plastics, one way of which is to replace plastic shopping bags with environmentally friendly bags.
PT TPP’s GKSP program is carried out in 14 fostered villages spread across two sub-districts in Indragiri Hulu, namely Lirik District and Pasir Penyu District.
The following are list of villages where the program is implemented: Lirik District (Sungai Sagu Village, Mekar Sari, Redang Seko, Banjar Balam, Gudang Batu). Pasir Penyu Sub-district (Tanah Merah Village, Sekar Mawar, Kembang Harum, Petalongan, Serumpun Jaya, Jati Rejo, Candi Rejo).
The Head of Sungai Sagu Village Posyandu, Leles Pujianti, expressed her appreciation to PT TPP for this good initiative.
“Thank you for the education and assistance provided. Hopefully, this activity can continue to positively impact the environment and further strengthen the relationship between the company and the community,” she said.
In this program, PT TPP distributed non-plastic shopping bags to the village community as an alternative to disposable plastic bags.
PT TPP’s Community Development Officer (CDO), Yudita Robi C, as well as PT TPP’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Assistant, Panji Wisnu Aji, attended the event along with village officials, chairpersons, and posyandu cadres.
According to Panji Wisnu Aji, this program is part of the company’s social responsibility in maintaining environmental sustainability.
“We hope that through education to the community, the use of plastic can be reduced and the environment maintained,” he explained.
PT TPP hopes the GKSP program will create a cleaner, healthier, and plastic-waste-free environment in its operational areas.
With this program’s sustainability, PT TPP is optimistic that it can help create an environmentally friendly, plastic-free assisted village.
